Original airbrush paintings by Phil Dynan. Some of the modeling is after Man Ray & Edward Weston.

The Verkerke Nudes

The artist was obsessed withthe creation of this set of paintings. He basically ate rice and curry for 8 months while working on the paintings night and day.

He had no market for the work, especially in the puratanical US. When he finished, he took a set of 24 C-Prints to the UK and started shopping around to publishers. With no luck in the UK, he made arrangments to show them to the Dutch company, Verkerke Reprodukties. He knew the company's work, and had bought posters from them in the 60's.

Arriving in Holland, the Verkerke people picked him up with a Limo at the train station. He was taken to see the great Engel Verkerke himself. Verkerke flipped through the C-Print presentation so fast that the artist resigned himself to yet another rejection. Verkerke closed the portfolio and picked up the phone. He ordered an accountant to bring a cheque book to his office and wrote out a $10,000 cheque. "Will this open negotiations?" he asked. The work was published as notecards and Fine Art prints in Verkerke's first "Fine Art Print" catalog.
